It's college football season, and the highlight game of the weekend matches Virginia Tech and Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. Why else would it be Saturday at 8 p.m. on ABC, and site of the College Gameday show?
The weekend starts Thursday with South Carolina visiting N.C. State on ESPN. Then Oregon visits Boise State, so you can go to sleep watching football on the blue turf.
Friday - when you're supposed to concentrate on high school football - it's Tulsa vs. Tulane.
Saturday, ESPN has Navy at Ohio State at noon, followed by Missouri vs. Illinois, BYU at Oklahoma in prime time and LSU at Washington at 10:30 p.m.
On ESPN2, it's Syracuse at Minnesota at noon, and Maryland at California after the NASCAR Nationwide race.
ABC kicks off it's 3:30 p.m. slot with Georgia vs. Oklahoma State. Guess which state will get Western Michigan at Michigan?
NBC offers Notre Dame hosting Nevada. Wow, such a traditional rivalry to start the season. Charlie Weis better win a few more this year.
Sunday, since the NFL is off, ESPN has Memphis vs. Mississipi in the afternoon. There's even Monday college football, with Rutgers vs. Cincinnati at 4 p.m. and ACC rivals Miami and Florida State meet at 8 p.m.
The NFL exhibition season closes Friday, with the Cowboys visiting the Vikings on NFL Network. The Redskins are in Jacksonville Thursday for their last preseason contest, and NBC29 has the Redskins Network coverage.
FOX has picked up the Rangers game at Baltimore as part of its Saturday package, joining Giants at Brewers and Red Sox at White Sox (also the TBS Sunday afternoon game). ESPN visits Dodgers Stadium Sunday night for a game against the Padres.
MASN2 has the Orioles-Rangers on Friday and Sunday, while the Nationals host the Marlins on MASN.
The middle rounds of the U.S. Open fill the weekend on CBS, with afternoon coverage Saturday through Monday.
NASCAR's Labor Day weekend race moves to Atlanta this year, and ESPN's coverage starts at 7 p.m. on Sunday. If attendance is poor, maybe they should move back to Darlington where the race belongs.
The PGA tour takes advantage of the Labor Day holiday, scheduling the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship for Monday. NBC is on the course Sunday and Monday.
